Declining & lateral development, boxhole and raisebore drilling, autonomous loading, haulage and stope production using longhole open stoping methods
Byrnecut won the four-year $440 million underground mining services contract at Saracen’s Carosue Dam Operations through a competitive open tender process.
Byrnecut operates the projects from a centralised operations base at Carosue Dam, 120km east of Kalgoorlie WA. A modern, large-scale workshop facility undertakes major and minor maintenance on the collective mining fleet.
The contract encompasses two mining centres – Carosue Dam, comprising the Karari and Whirling Dervish mines, and Deep South, 100km north.
The Carosue Dam mines utilise emulsion explosives, with production charging being undertaken by Orica, using an MCU on a subcontract basis. Deep South is an ANFO operation.
New technology and innovation are key to the project. A large fleet of Sandvik LH621i autonomously operated loaders (using Automine, Rhino boxhole drill, truck driver fatigue monitoring and collision avoidance systems) plays a pivotal role at the operation.
The contract provides employment for more than 300 personnel, working 365 days per year, 24 hours per day.
Access to the site is via unsealed roads from Kalgoorlie or Leonora. An airstrip has also operated since 2019. Personnel currently commute on a fly-in fly-out basis directly to CDO or by road from Kalgoorlie.
