Two mines - Degrussa and Monty

Byrnecut commenced operations at Sandfire Resources’ Degrussa Copper Mine in July 2014, after acquiring the contract through an open tender process.

The Degrussa underground mine is a high-grade copper deposit and commenced operation in 2012. The mine comprises over 38km of underground development and produces almost 1.7 million tonnes of copper ore for up to 300,000 tonnes of high-grade copper concentrate per year.

Following a successful contract re-tender in 2017, Byrnecut’s tenure was extended for a further three years. The new contract also includes the development of Sandfire’s second mine, Monty.

Monty is managed and operated as a satellite project from the main Degrussa hub.

Byrnecut undertakes all underground development and longhole stoping production operations. A substantial part of the site activities comprise fibrecrete and cemented aggregate fill mixing, delivery and application, and paste-fill operations.

Extraction from open stopes is conducted using Caterpillar Minegem autonomous remote-controlled loaders. Mine-life is estimated at seven years and Byrnecut expects to be there for the duration.

The mine operates 365 days per year, 24 hours per day, with sealed road access from Perth. Byrnecut operates on a fly-in, fly-out basis from Perth, with the contract providing employment for 228 personnel.
