Byrnecut commenced mining at the revitalised Gwalia Deeps mine in 2012, securing the work through an open tender process.

The Sons of Gwalia Gold Mine was originally established by Welsh miners in 1896. The shallow dipping nature of the orebody saw the construction of an underlay shaft and elaborate timber headframe which still exists to this day. Modern underground mining commenced in 2001 with the construction of a haulage decline from surface. Stoping methods are long-hole open stoping with paste fill.

Byrnecut commenced mining at the revitalised Gwalia Deeps mine in 2012, securing the work through an open tender process.

Mining operations are some of the deepest in Australia with current production levels 1,500m below surface, and decline approaching 1,600m. Truck haulage is still utilised for ore production with haul distances well in excess of 12km.

The Gwalia operation is undertaken 365 days per year, 24 hours per day. Access is via sealed road from Kalgoorlie and a commercial air service from Perth. Byrnecut employs almost 260 people on a predominantly fly-in, fly-out basis from Perth.
