Establishing and development of the Western Copper and Ankata Decline, all level and vertical development, longhole open stoping with paste fill production activities
Byrnecut has been involved at OZ Minerals’ Prominent Hill underground mine since cutting the portal in 2010.
Byrnecut has completed in excess of 36km of development and produced over 4 million tonnes of copper-gold ore.
Byrnecut is currently developing an expansion to the underground mine to bring the Malu orebody into production. Byrnecut undertakes all underground activities at Prominent Hill, including development, longhole drilling and charging, paste fill, stope bogging and haulage to surface using modified rigid body off-highway trucks.
The mine utilises large-scale underground mining equipment with 21-tonne-capacity Sandvik LH621 loaders extracting the ore using remote-controlled and autonomous guidance systems.
Sandvik UG haul trucks undertake all underground haulage to the surface portal, where it is re-handled by the open pit fleet. Prominent Hill is located in the remote, arid northern Woomera region of South Australia, and is accessed by sealed road and air transport.
Byrnecut operates the mine 365 days per year, 24 hours per day, on a fly-in, fly-out basis from Adelaide. The company employs almost 320 people under the mining contract.
