The Thunderbox mine is a major underground gold mine for Northern Star. Byrnecut established the underground mine and infrastructure; portals, access declines, drill drives, together with ventilation rises, escapeway and slot rises.

Byrnecut was initially selected from a short list of contractors through a competitive tender process, building on the successful relationship established via the Carosue Dam Operations, 200km to the south.

Byrnecut recently secured the production contract for an additional four years in 2020. The mining contract provides employment for up to 200 personnel, working 365 days per year, 24 hours per day.

Thunderbox has successfully transitioned into a large modern sub-level caving operation and Byrnecut are pleased to partner with Northern Star, one of Australia’s largest gold producers.

As a previous open pit operation, an airstrip and camp are already established on site. Access to site is via predominantly sealed roads from Kalgoorlie and Leinster, with personnel currently commuting to site on a FIFO basis from Perth.
